Nonfiction Authors Association

This Memorial Weekend it is only fitting that I have selected RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB'S author, Bob Kern as my selection for Pay It Forward. He is an accomplished and award-winning author, blogger, and retired member of the Armed Services.

His 5 book series, We Were Soldiers Too will eventually be a series of 12 books due to the overwhelming support he has received from veterans.

Bob was in the U.S. Army in the 1980's and served for almost 8 years. He quickly learned things about being in the service that civilians are not knowledgeable about. Therefore, he decided cowrite about his military experience.

His first book, We Were Soldiers Too: Serving As A Reagan Soldier During the Cold War. It has been turned into a Cold War documentary series telling the history of the Cold War from the perspective of the veterans who served during this critical time in history.

Bob Kern tells his story in a clear, lucid, and engaging way. If you want to know what an infantry soldier's career is like in peacetime, you cannot do better than to read this book. (Roger J. Huffington)

In Bob Kern's moving tribute to these Cold War warriors, he looks at his service during the Reagan years and what it was like to be in the military at this time. It's a good story that could be true for anyone who served during this time. I should know, I was also in the military at this time (1976-1980). Of course, if one was serving in Germany during this time, life was one exercise after another because the threat was very, very real. Kern does a superb job of articulating this threat and the need to be in a constant state of readiness. (Jeffrey Miller)

This book was a well written memoir, a fast-paced page-turner that I was able to read very quickly. There were very few grammatical errors in it; it was obviously written in the author's own words, not over-edited to the point that it sounded like somebody else wrote it. I mean this as a compliment; the author's own voice came through. That's what gave it life. I plan to buy the other books in the series. Definitely five stars. (Mary Raynor)

My personal thanks to Bob Kern and all those who have and are currently serving. We have freedom thanks to their sacrifices.

  1. Thank you for featuring my series on Memorial Day Weekend. This series is a project of passion of mine as it documents a critical time in our history that is overlooked and soon may be forgotten. I am humbled by the number of Cold War veterans who continue to volunteer to share their careers with me in this series.

Each book focuses on a specific part of the Cold War and documents what actually happened through the careers of the Cold War veterans that served during this critical time in history. Every chapter featured a different veterans career and is done in chronological order.

I truly appreciate having my series featured on this weekend we honor and remember those veterans who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Thank you Karen.
