DAVIDA: MODEL & MISTRESS OF AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS

Welcome to my new book trailer for which I am extremely proud. I never met my great-grandparents but their forbidden love for each  other was true and unconditional.
It is my hope that the reader will come away with these thoughts:
             1. Saint-Gaudens was a remarkably talented sculptor
             2. Davida was the ethereal woman in beauty & character.
             3. We cannot judge the actions of others.
             4. Their 25 year love affair was beautiful and genuine.

AN EXCERPT:

My heart was breaking for the man I loved so much. I had always
known this situation would come. I had dreaded it. I had talked many
times to Maria and Mother about my forbidden love with Gus. Now the
day had come.
“Gus, let me ask you a question—but you must hear it as my pledge
of love and devotion to you.”
He looked at me with fear in his eyes.
“Just hear me out, please.”
I waited until he seemed to relax his body a little.
“With love, there is always sacrifice. That is something my parents
taught me. My father sacrificed his parents’ love and approval when he
married Mother without their blessing. And now, this torment you are
going through because of our love—it is torment for me. According to
society and the church, our love is wrong.”
“It is not wrong—” he began.
“No, let me finish,” I countered back. I took a deep breath. “I will
move away. I will be out of your life, so you can rebuild your marriage
before Gussie finds out about me. She may even now be suspicious. I do
not know. But I do know her health would improve if she were at peace
and could see and feel your complete love for her.” I fought back the
tears and struggled to get my words out. “I could start a new life away
from New York. My selfish desire to be the only woman in your life is
not love. For your peace, for Gussie’s health, and for your career, I will
make this sacrifice.”
Gus sat on the settee and buried his face in his hands, crying as I
had never heard anyone before.
After a few minutes, I said, “You know this is for the best.” I kept
repeating it.
Then we sat quietly side by side for a long time.
